Do you know the safe recommended distance between trees and powerlines? Is it time for a trim?

It is estimated that 10-20% of all unplanned power outages are caused by trees coming into contact with power lines. Pruning trees near powerlines is extremely dangerous and should not be underestimated or attempted, except by qualified professionals.

Failing to manage and maintain trees on your property could also result in:

  • Fire damage to your property from branches sparking in dry conditions.
  • Serious injury through electrocution from contact with trees touching power lines.

Tree owners need to ensure that branches and vegetation are at least 1.5 metres away from low voltage lines or at least 4 metres from high voltage lines. As a tree owner, you may be liable for any damage caused by carrying out trimming or felling of trees.

What are you responsible for as a tree owner?

If your trees or vegetation are located near powerlines and within growth and fall zones – it is your responsibility to ensure the power network is protected with regular professional pruning.

As per The Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003: Tree owners of tall ‘fall distance’ trees that are not covered by the regulations are potentially liable for any damage caused to lines or associated electricity network equipment, including any damages that may be claimed by affected third parties.

  • You are breaking regulation if your vegetation is within the 1.5 meters growth limit zone for the lines that go to your house from the street pole.
  • You could be liable for any damage to the electricity network if your trees damage lines or equipment.
